Question: #1: How do you become a product rep for an outfitting store (ie REI)?
I was reading in Outdoor about all these cool jobsyou can get like testing out new kayaks, tents andall kinds of fun stuff. The job sounds awesome butI have no idea how to even go about searching forone.
- asked by ProjCon
well, if you wanna become a product rep, you wouldhook on with a certain outdoor equipment company, like Gregory, Mountain Hardware, etc. you get ajob with them and then you can move up to productrep and they assign you to a location where thierproduct is sold. Now if ya wanna become a producttester, it is pretty much the same steps, but youwould move into the job of product tester and notrep. Now, I personally know that as an employee ofREI you can sign up to be a product tester andtest REI brand equipment. All you have to do is bean employee, sales person, cashier, etc. That isprobably the easiest and it is fun to work at REItoo. BONUS!!!! Hey, does anyone know if or when REI outdoor store will have another sale before the end of the year?Anyone work for them? They don't advertise salesahead of time of course, but I'd like to knowbecause I'm debating on whether or not I shouldget the gear for my backpacking trip now or waittill Thanksgiving/Christmas season.

i can't remember, but check out REI Outlet. Thelast time they had a BIG SALE it was everythingthat had a price ending in $0.93. There was apair of hiking boots, normally $200, that I couldhave bought for $50. I passed... duh. I hope theyhave a sale soon! Question: #3: Why was REI unable to implement same day buy on-line/pickup in store similar to Best Buy orCircuit City?
I'm interested in hearing what, if any, technicalconstraints (or lack of a real-time inventorysystem) may have been the issue.
- asked by student
It's a co-op after all. Might not be the bestprice in town, but their satisfactory returnpolicy is top rate. Probably just as good ascostco. So, it is worth the exercise to walk thruthe store mingling with all of the associates. Quality items.... Trekking, hiking, camping, backpacking, etc. I purchase about 75% of myhiking / camping gear for their quality products, service and most of all return policy.... Satisfied member since 1984. Question: #4: How do I get a product in to stores? If I wanted to get my product into Borders or REI who would Italk to?
My product is a map. I want it to be in travelstores/bookstores, etc. I am a small start-upwith not a lot of capital. Should I hire amarketing specialist or someone who is an expertat doing this? What should I expect to pay? Whatdo I look for if I need to find a firm to marketit?
- asked by The LAB
If you're short on capital I'd check into a varietof options. Cafepress has some nice options forpublishing and setting up your own store. You canbuild a reputation and client base this way.Alternatively look into cooperative publishing orjust out-right contracting your map to one of thevarious publishers in that end of the industry. Irealize you want to retain control, but the saleof THAT map could provide you with the income tobuild your business independently from there. Youcan hire a PR/Marketer but they're not cheap. Thebest price I could find was $1,000 a month andthat didn't get me much coverage at all. You alsoneed to expect to do a lot of your own PR nomatter what. It's just part of the "gig"If you geta marketer you want someone or a firm familiarwith your demographic - ie. your product andtarget audience. You can try finding a freelancer, but you might end up with less experience thannecessary in such a tight market.Hope that helps. - answered by: Loresinger99 View All Answers (2)
Question: #5: What type of store sells a geologist's rock pick?
Home Depot and REI do not. I just want one for hobby, but I don't want to buy it online. Ifanyone knows a specific store in San Diego too, that would be spectacular.
- asked by Ed
Most stores that sell gold mining-prospectorequipment will have them. If still having aproblem, call a store that sells metaldetectors-they should be able to give youadditional contact informationThere were severalof each in Orange county - answered by: Truth Seeker View All Answers (5)
Question: #6: has anyone been to any mountain store?
I was wondering if anyone has been to any mountain. This store is rude and stuck up comparedto Rei. Is this just my experience? I've beenthere many times and people don't even want to goin there because they're so rude.
- asked by P.Ariel
I liked it. What one did you go to? Don't base astore on ONE store clerk. Big 5 store is likethis.. .bad clerks in one, and not in the other. - answered by: jtoothman25 View All Answers (1)

Question: #8: Which is the largest REI in the South Bay?
I'm in Sunnyvale so I guess I'm mainly wondering which of Mountain View or San Jose stores is thelarger?I ended up visiting both and the MountainView REI is bigger than the one in San Jose.
- asked by goosmurf
I guess no one can really answer this questionwithout going to all of the stores, and I haven'tdone that. Nevertheless, I think you're right.Mountain View is certainly bigger than San Jose, and if I recall correctly, it's also bigger thanFremont, although the layout is somewhatdifferent.Of course, REI has such cool stuff, maybe we should conduct "scientific research"about the various stores, just to be sure. :-) - answered by: cloothe View All Answers (1)
Question: #9: Should I get an REI Zephyr bag?
Ok, I'm really short, so I have a 15+ REI Zigzag bag, but it doesn't seem that warm (maybe it waswhen I forgot to store it out of its stuff sack) ,so I was thinking about getting a Zephyr. Is itactually a 15+ bag?
- asked by dc12volthippy
You know, REI has a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you don't think your bag is meeting yourexpectations you can return it for a refund orexchange. Even if it's been used. http://www.rei.com/shared/help/returns.html?storeId=8000But it's really important to keep your baghanging or layed out, not stuffed in the sack. Andmaybe if the one REI bag isn't warm enough for youanother won't be either and you should try anotherbrand? - answered by: Schnurrbart, P.I. View All Answers (2)
Question: #10: When did REI become yet another trendy, yuppie, outdoor clothier, boutique?
More and more, I've noticed that REI has gottenaway from being an outdoor equipment outfitter andhas become yet another one of those trendy, mainstream outdoor clothing boutiques. In all thestores that I've gone to, including the "flagship"store in Seattle, about 75% of the floor space isgiven over to clothing. No webbing, cam-buckles,tri-glides, carbiners or repelling gloves, but Icould get a laptop case, dog toys and flamelessovens for my vegetarian freeze-dried apple pie.

Retail stores face the problem of high rent andpleasing the people who choose to visit theirstore. The people who are buying from thesestores choose the items you describe, for the samereason they buy SUVs and drive them on pavedroads. As a hiker and backpacker, I am finding itincreasingly more productive to order gear online. Link below is to a story that may help you solveyour gear purchase challenge. These days I purchasedried food and dehydrated food items in bulk at mylocal health food store and I buy LARABARs by thecase from Whole Foods. Not only am I getting morebang for my buck - but that's one less vehicle onthe roads.Happy Trails. - answered by: writerbynature View All Answers (2)
