Question: #2: has anyone hear about "www.wine.com"?
- asked by nan c

They have been around since the dot com gold rush(1999). The company that originally had thedomain went belly up with the dot com crash and asurviving competitor picked up some of theremaining assets, but most importantly, the domainname. I don't remember the name they had prior togetting the wine.com domain. They have survived forat least eight years now, and claim to be the #1wine store on the internet. I haven't made apurchase from them, so can't give you any guidancethere. - answered by: Mead_Master

I am assuming you live in Japan... If you can readJapanese, go to any Japanese search engine and goto "検索オプション" (Advanced Search) andtype in "wine +ship* +Japan" next to"<入力必須事項>" (Mandatory Field) under"キーワード すべて含む" (Keyword / withall of these words). Then scroll down to"対象とする言語" (Language) and check"英語" (English).Yahoo returned 1,670,000results ;-) - answered by: fortuna0820

Question: #7: Is there anywhere to get good wines at a discount?
Wine.com and many of the other web retailers areokay but don't offer that big of a discount. - asked by Kal

I always like to help the local retailers. Find awine shop that has a nice selection and chat withthe employees. Getting to know each other, they'llmake recommendations to try wines you wouldn'thave thought of that will usually be great. It thebottle is a couple bucks more than you would havepaid at a discout retailer, no biggie, you'regetting better service and will learn a lot moreabout wine this way. That said, when I just wantthe bottom line price, here's where I go (listedin order):Brick:Trader JoesCostcoBevmoOnline:K&LWine MerchantThe Wine ClubRed Carpet Wine - answered by: jatea4

Question: #8: Aspiring wine connoisseur... ?
Can you reccomend any good websites forinformation on how to begin a wine collection? Not that I don't trust the big sites (likewine.com) but was wondering if you could suggestany lesser know resources. Also, any links tosmaller local vinyards you may be partial to wouldbe appreciated. - asked by justr

The man who has basically cornered the market onwine ratings is Robert Parker. His rating candrive the market for a wine from $100 to $1,000 abottle. I suggest you start with his book,Bordeaux, and visit his website. A great venue tobuy fine, rare, investment quality wines is "thewine commune", where sellers can post their winesfor sale in an auction format much like ebay. Youwill find that almost all collectors of fine wineuse the RP rating or Robert Parker's rating todefine an outstanding vintage and vintner from amediocre one. It is ironic, as most peoples tasteis not the same as his, but nonetheless, he isconsidered the guru zen-master.You are correct tostay away from wine.com and wine spectatorBTW, thedtrippers post are all average California wines, except Paulmeyer is spelled Pahlmeyer. The verybest of the best of the Cal Cabs are ScreamingEagle, Harlan, Maya, Colgin, Bryant, Caymus,Pride, Hundred Acre, etc. You should write aletter to each one and ask to be placed on theirallocation list. In about 5-10 years you will beaccepted and will be able to buy wines directlyfrom them at a considerable discount over retail.Screaming Eagle is about $350 bottle on allocationand about $1,200 a bottle at market.A Bientot! - answered by: constablekenworthysboy
