Great holiday gift ideas

Wine.com offers a great selection of wine, gift baskets, wine related gifts, and more
Question : Aspiring wine connoisseur... ?
Can you reccomend any good websites for information on how to begin a wine collection? Not that I don't trust the big sites (like wine.com) but was wondering if you could suggest any lesser know resources. Also, any links to smaller local vinyards you may be partial to would be appreciated.

The man who has basically cornered the market onwine ratings is Robert Parker. His rating candrive the market for a wine from $100 to $1,000 abottle. I suggest you start with his book,Bordeaux, and visit his website. A great venue tobuy fine, rare, investment quality wines is "thewine commune", where sellers can post their winesfor sale in an auction format much like ebay. Youwill find that almost all collectors of fine wineuse the RP rating or Robert Parker's rating todefine an outstanding vintage and vintner from amediocre one. It is ironic, as most peoples tasteis not the same as his, but nonetheless, he isconsidered the guru zen-master.You are correct tostay away from wine.com and wine spectatorBTW, thedtrippers post are all average California wines, except Paulmeyer is spelled Pahlmeyer. The verybest of the best of the Cal Cabs are ScreamingEagle, Harlan, Maya, Colgin, Bryant, Caymus,Pride, Hundred Acre, etc. You should write aletter to each one and ask to be placed on theirallocation list. In about 5-10 years you will beaccepted and will be able to buy wines directlyfrom them at a considerable discount over retail.Screaming Eagle is about $350 bottle on allocationand about $1,200 a bottle at market.A Bientot!
